Interview with Simon Kloostra from JoomlaSEO.com

After a few technical issues with technology, Simon and I finally get to chat about a few great things that you can do in regards to search engine optimisation for your Joomla! website or in fact, any website.

1) Think About the User

Simon's first tip was around the user experience. You can build a site stuffed with keywords and search engine optimised links but if the user struggles to find information or is not given the right information, the is ends up being not useful. Keep search engine optimisation best practises in the back of your mind as you're building but don't let it be your number one focus.

2) Write Good Meta Tags

This includes the titles of your pages and the meta description. This here is an important step as this is what users will see when they get a search result from Google. You can leave them blank and let Google sort it out for you but it is better if you spend the time and effort in writing good descriptions that related directly to the content on the page.

3) Search Engine Optimisation Configuration

Make sure that your Joomla website is configured correctly for search engine optimisation. If you have an apache server, you should turn on the .htaccess file that comes with Joomla and enable the Global Configuration option for this.

Making sure you set up your website right in the first place will save you time and energy in the long run when it comes to optimisation.

4) Categorisation and Structure

Make sure you organise your content correctly and in an appropriate way. Taking advantage of building good categories in Joomla can make you out rank the competition. Make use and good use of your category blog pages and make them really useful and not just a page with links. Think of what is most appropriate for your users of your website when landing on a top level category area of your website.

5) Crawl for Errors

Using tools to crawl your website like, "Screaming Frog, SEO Spider" to find errors on your website and get them fixed. Customise your 404 error page on your website and make better use of that Internet real estate. Google doesn't like a miss managed site with errors. Fix them as soon as you can.
